Two-time Academy Award® nominee Bradley Cooper (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) returns to Broadway in Bernard Pomerance’s Tony Award®-winning classic THE ELEPHANT MAN. Directed by Tony nominee Scott Ellis, THE ELEPHANT MAN was one of the hottest productions to emerge from the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival, where it had theatergoers lining up hours ahead of time in the hopes of securing a ticket. This extremely limited engagement also stars Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson (Six Feet Under) and Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle).
Based on the real life of Joseph Merrick, THE ELEPHANT MAN tells the story of a 19th-century British man (Cooper) who became a star of the traveling freak show circuit. When the renowned Dr. Treves (Nivola) takes Merrick under his care at the London Hospital, he is astonished by Merrick’s brilliant intelligence and unshakable faith. Soon all of Victorian high society becomes fascinated by Merrick, especially the beautiful actress Mrs. Kendal (Clarkson). But with his new life comes new complexity… and a "normal” existence begins to seem all but impossible.
Don't miss this acclaimed new production of the classic play that examines those most spectacular of specimens: human beings -- somehow capable of everything from shameful exploitation to extraordinary kindness… and everything in between.
Bradley Cooper and Scott Ellis on the Irresistible Pull of The Elephant Man
Bradley Cooper knows that his obsession with Joseph “John” Merrick, the 19th century Englishman known as the Elephant Man, surprises people.
Patricia Clarkson's Broadway Homecoming
When Bradley Cooper signed on to star in The Elephant Man at Williamstown Theatre Festival two summers ago, he immediately offered the pivotal role of Mrs. Kendal to Patricia Clarkson. Smart casting: Who better to play a witty, worldly, charismatic actress than a woman who embodies all of those qualities in real life?
